“Dear Lady, go home and sit still!”
Our inspiration for Maud was sparked by the remarkable life of Dr. Elsie Maud Inglis.
Born in 1864, Elsie Maud Inglis was a Scottish doctor, surgeon, teacher, suffragist, and founder of the Scottish Women’s Hospitals.
In the First World War, Dr Elsie Inglis offered to set up a medical unit staffed by women for the war front. The British War Office told her, “Dear lady, go home and sit still”. Dr Inglis refused to do that.
Well-travelled, with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to carve her own path, Elsie was caring and generous and a champion for equality. Pioneering, tenacious, innovative and bold – we are inspired by and pay tribute to Elsie Maud Inglis.
We also refuse to sit still. We are Maud.
